A car battery lasts many years and today's' batteries are generally maintenance-free, meaning that from the moment one is fitted, you don't have to touch it again until it needs replacing.Some car batteries have a battery condition indicator on the top, so get to know when the condition of the battery is deteriorating.Other than that, the only other method for determining the state of your battery is to use a voltmeter to test for voltage and a hydrometer to test the condition of the acid in the battery.The latter method is only required if you have a battery that isn't sealed and has removable cell caps.However, it's likely that you don't think twice about the condition of the battery until one morning you find your car doesn't start due to a dead battery.During the day, when you keep using your car, the battery is kept warm and gets charged.However, if you have cell damage; and it only takes one of the six cells, then the temperature at night means that any charge in the cell can dissipate and you are not left with enough voltage to start your car.Unfortunately this tends to happen without warning and it seems to always be on the first really cold morning that it happens.It's generally a fairly simple process to replace your car's battery and in most cases very few tools or mechanical knowledge is necessary.Importantly, it's also substantially less expensive if you replace the battery yourself, rather than getting a garage to do it.Firstly, remove both the cables from the battery terminals.You'll need a suitably sized wrench to loosen the bolts on the cable clamps, and then just simply lift them off the terminals and push them away from the battery.Check around the battery to find the bracket that holds the battery on the battery tray.All car batteries connect differently, so it's a matter of locating the bracket that holds the battery in place.It could be on the side or top of the battery.Use a wrench or screwdriver to loosen the nuts or screws holding the bracket in place.You will find the bracket can be moved, once the nuts or screws are loosened enough.Slide the bracket out of the way.Lift the battery from the battery tray.Put the new battery onto the battery tray; make sure you have the battery terminals facing the same way as the one you removed.Replace the bracket and tighten the nuts or screws.Check the battery is held tightly in place.Reconnect the two battery cables to the battery terminals.On the top or to the side of each terminal you will find the polarity of each terminal.One is labeled "+" and the other "-." Connect the black cable clamp to the "-" terminal and the red cable clamp to the "+" terminal.Tighten the clamps and you're done and ready to get on your way.

The first part of the answer is that it takes close to a full 12 volts to start your car.So if you're battery is at 11.2 volts, sorry but you're probably out of luck.The second part of that has to do with how it recharges itself as it runs.How It Recharges.You car has something called the alternator.This takes the mechanical motion of the engine, via alternator belt, and produces electricity to recharge the battery.It's like a give and take relationship.The car battery starts the engine, which in turn recharges it back up as it runs on gasoline.That's why after you jump start a car, you should probably run it for a while before you shut it off again.There is a little computer attached to the alternator that tells it to charge or stop charging the battery.That's a great little thing to have working because if you overcharge the battery, you can create hydrogen and that can cause the battery to explode.So why then do you have to buy a new car battery every so often? Well, because the batteries tend to not hold the charge as much as time goes by.Most 12 volt batteries actually hold close to 13 volts.A mechanic once told me that they call it 12 volt batteries because 13 is an unlucky number.I don't know if that's an urban legend or not.But either way, it holds more than 12 volts.Then over time it starts to fade.And when it can't hold much more than 12 volts anymore, than it's time to get a new battery.

Before the action can begin, this stunt set needs to be assembled. Well-illustrated instructions and track pieces that are easy to slide together make set-up a quick process. You'll need a small Philips head screwdriver to install the two D cell batteries (not included) that run the power booster.

Even with an illustration showing all the launch buttons and the different settings on the power loop, it took us a few minutes of playing with the track to figure out how all the stunts worked. Younger racecar enthusiasts may need to be shown how to control the launchers and the release ramp, but once they get it, they're sure to invent all kinds of exciting games centered around the power loop set.

Three Serious Stunts
The centerpiece of this set is the power loop stunt. Featuring a pair of vertical loops that cross "dangerously" in the sky, a motorized speed booster, and a release ramp that can be operated automatically or manually, this trick is the perfect place to set multiple cars spinning and wait for awesome crashes. Kids will love popping open the release ramp to send cars shooting across the floor.

The mega drop is a section of track that can be clamped onto a table or chair to produce a velocity-inducing descent worthy of any roller coaster. A buffer at the bottom of the drop stops the car and lets you pick when the next stunt begins. To start the second trick, a heavy duty rubber band powers an arm that launches your Hot Wheels car into the 360-degree loop. Again, a buffer stops the car after it has completed this trick. At first, we were disappointed that the stunts were separated instead of having a continuous track, but then we realized that each time a car gets "stuck" under a buffer, it activates the launch button for the next stunt in the line. With three or more cars, this becomes a really fun feature that makes it easy for several children to use the set at once. Friends will need to have their own Hot Wheels cars for serious track sessions, since the set only comes with one durable little car. Be careful purchasing extra cars, because not all Hot Wheels are designed for track use.

Owning a car involves more than just making sure the fuel tank is full, that there is windshield wiper fluid in the car and that the tire pressure is not below the stated number in the owner's manual.Everyone that owns a car should know how to change a tire, change the oil and should know how to jump start the battery in their car in case the car stalls while on the road.Jump starting a car is not as easy as it sounds and there are a handful of steps that need to be followed for the jump start to be completed successfully and safely.The first step in jump starting a car is to park the jumper car in close proximity to the stalled vehicle.Usually most jumper cars are placed only five feet or so from the stalled car with their fronts facing each other.Just make sure that the two cars do not touch in any way.Make sure you use clean jumper cables and never let them dangle into the engine compartment where they can get caught on belts or the fan.Once the jumper cables have been readied for the project, make sure the ignition is off in both cars and set the parking brake of each car.Make sure either car is in neutral or park.Turn off all lights and radios but put the hazards on if you are on the side of a road.Now you can begin the jumping process.Place one of the positive jumper cables onto the positive terminal of the battery of the stalled vehicle.Then connect the other positive end of the cable to the positive end of the battery terminal in the jumper car.Now attach the negative end of the cable to the negative end of the battery terminal on the jumper car.Attach the other negative end of the cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine of the stalled car.By doing this, the vehicle is now further grounded.Before performing the jump start, make one final check to make sure that the jumper cables are securely attached to the vehicle and are not near any moving parts on the engine.Now you can start the jumper car and let it idle for a handful of minutes.Once the idling has been done for around five minutes you can now start the stalled car.Once the stalled vehicle is started, make sure that both vehicles stay on and have them idle for another five minutes or so.If the stalled vehicle won't start, do not keep trying.This will lead to damage of the starter on the stalled vehicle.Once you are able to start the stalled car you can disconnect the starter cables.Take them off in the reverse order of how you put them on.Also, do not let them touch each other or anything under the hood.To be sure that the stalled vehicle will not stall again, take it to an auto body shop for a complete battery charge and quick once over.

Hopefully my experience a few weeks ago will help others know when their car battery is dead.The other day as I was on my way to work, I turned the ignition on my 2006 Kia Sorento and it made a clicking noise.There was no churning sound from the engine at all.Luckily I was in the parking lot of my own home, but since it was a fairly new car, I did wonder why a starter or alternator would break down so soon.I called my father who is an expert and he guessed it may be a dead battery.All I know is that I did not have Triple A and my warranty for starter/alternator just ran out after 60 thousand miles.It was a relief to eventually find out that my 3 and a half year old car battery did need to be replaced and that the whole replacement was done for around $120 at PepBoys.The frustrating thing was that my battery jump starter was out of commission! I had misplaced the adapter that recharges the car jump starter.So my father and brother ended up helping me jump start my car the old fashion way, with two cars and jumper cables!When I went online that day I found out that a car battery typically lasts for about 3-5 years.According to the PepBoys technician, in a relatively new model, the battery will generally die out first, before the alternator or motor starter.So that is good news for all those who have new cars, as a battery replacement is relatively inexpensive.So if your 3 to 4 year old car does not start, it is not necessarily a time to panic.Odds are you may need a new battery.Keep a car battery booster in your trunk for convenience so you can jump start it and drive it to a local shop.PepBoys has a full package where they check the whole starting system and replace the car battery for around $100, which is not too bad considering an alternator repair can total over $400!If you are unsure which one needs replacing, you can do a simple test if you have a voltage meter.The alternator is attached to one of the drive belts and should have an engine idle voltage of 13.6 to 14.3 volts.The battery should be 12.5 to 12.8 volts after sitting overnight.If the alternator is low it may not charge the battery even when you jump start your vehicle and the car may stall while driving to the shop.I remember my car stalling a few years ago due to a bad alternator right in the middle of rush hour traffic on the Belt Parkway, NY! As you probably figured, it cost me a fortune to tow and repair.However, as in my case a few weeks ago, if the battery is a dead one a good alternator may still charge it enough after a jump start to drive it to a local car shop.I recommend getting Triple A after your warranty is expired as it is not a question of if you need a tow it is when.Everyone will experience that at least once in their lifetime.I hope this helps and until next time, always drive safely!

You insert the key into your car's ignition, turn it and the engine remains lifeless.You try it again and there is no sound coming from underneath the car's hood except perhaps for a rapid clicking noise.In all likelihood your battery is dead - on closer inspection you realize that you left the car's headlights on, draining the battery of precious juice.Fortunately for you, you're not stranded someplace where traffic is non-existent such as on the back road.Even if you were, you may be able to flag someone down who can offer you some much needed help, sending you on your way within minutes.Jump starting your car battery is a simple process, one that you can quickly handle by following these easy steps..1.Line them up - You'll need to have another car or at least access to a strong, working battery to get your car going again.Turn off your headlights and anything else that is still in the on position in your car including the audio system.Pop the hood of your car to locate your battery.Have the driver of the second car align his front end with your front end as close to your car as possible without touching it.2.Wipe it down - Locate your battery and take a clean cloth or rag and wipe off the battery posts.If much corrosion is present, you may need to disconnect, clean off and spray the posts with a battery cleaning solution.If the battery is leaking or otherwise damaged, you'll need to replace it.Skip the remaining steps and buy a new battery instead.3.Connection to connection - Connect one end of the red positive cable to the good battery and the other end of the red positive cable to the bad battery.Connect one of the black negative cable to the good battery and the other end to a metal, non-shiny part of the dead car.You will not be connecting it to the battery as you want to avoid the possibility of an explosion.Find a grounded metal location under the hood of the dead battery's car.4.Start your engines - The driver of the car with the good battery should start his car first.About one minute later, the driver of the car with the bad battery will start his car second.The second car should come to life quickly, but if not start it again.Check the battery cable connections too and then try again.Once the car with the formerly bad battery starts you're ready to move on to the final step.5.Disconnect the cables - Disconnect the black negative cable from the car that had the dead battery and then disconnect that same cable from the other vehicle.Disconnect the red positive cable from the good battery car and then the red positive cable from the formerly dead battery car.Put the cables away, close your car hoods and head on out.Important Considerations.Once your car has been restarted, you'll want to ensure that the battery has enough voltage.A voltmeter can measure the battery and it should read at least 12 volts.Keep a set of jumper cables in your car and if your battery is old, replace it immediately before you encounter battery failure again.
