    I recently learned that you could recondition a battery and restore it to near 100% working condition again using something called a desulfator.It had been something that I had been trying to figure out for quite some time.I'm sure that you've noticed that over time any battery that you use seems to hold less of a charge (it dies quicker).For most household rechargeable batteries this really isn't a big deal because they don't really cost that much to replace.In the case of lead acid batteries though.They can cost upwards of $100 to replace and I really wanted to find out some way to make them last longer.After quite a long time of searching I finally learned about battery reconditioning.Battery reconditioning is a very interesting process.Basically, you hook up a desulfator (which also goes by the name nanopulser) and over time it rejuvenated your old battery to 100% working condition again.First, you should learn exactly why your lead acid batteries stop working in the first place.As you charge and discharge a deep cycle battery it begins to build up sulfates on the lead plates in the battery.When these sulfates start sticking to the plates instead of floating around in the acid your battery starts to hold less of a charge.If nothing is done enough of these sulfates build up and eventually the battery will simply not hold a charge anymore.That is.Unless you decide to recondition it.Basically what a battery reconditioner does is send high amperage extremely fast pulses of energy into the battery.These pulses break up the sulfates that have stuck on to the lead plates in the battery and they once again dissolve back in to the battery acid.Generally, battery reconditioning happens over a period of 1 - 3 weeks.The process is as follows..The very first thing you do is hook up your battery charger to the battery and do a full charge.Once it's fully charged you then unhook the battery and let it sit for 8 - 10 hours.After it's done sitting get your multimeter out and take a voltage reading.As long as it reads above 10.6 volts than it means that this battery is a good candidate for reconditioning.Now you hook the battery reconditioner up to the battery and let it do it's thing for a couple of days (make sure to leave the charger hooked up on trickle charge).After that, you fully discharge the battery and charge it back up again.Take a voltage reading and keep repeating this process until you reach 13.6 volts to 14.8 volts (depending on your battery) reading on your multimeter.The nice thing about battery reconditioning is that as long as you take care of your batteries you can keep reconditioning them until they get a shorted or open cell.That means instead of your batteries lasting you 2 - 5 years they could last you 10 or more years (with proper care).Is learning how to recondition a battery worth it?     Power outage can be a common occurrence during a severe rain storm.The sump system in a home typically relies on a heavy duty AC primary pump to discharge water entering the home through its drainage system.To compensate for the possibility of a power outage, the sump pit may include a battery-operated DC or AC driven pump in addition to the primary pump.How do these AC/DC pumps differ in function and performance?A DC based back up system typically consists of a DC pump, a 12 volt deep cycle battery (2 batteries if a 24 volt system), and a charger.Most DC pumps used as part of a back-up system were initially designed to be bilge pumps for boats and are not heavy duty, but some work well.A characteristic of a DC system versus an AC system is that the rate that it discharges is related to the degree that the battery power source is charged.A fully charged 12 volt battery will power the DC pump to its maximum capability.As the charge of the battery is consumed, the pumping rate of the DC pump diminishes.For example, a given pump will discharge at the rate of 30 gallons per minute with a fully charged battery, but may only be pumping at 15 gallons per minute when half of the charge is still left with the battery.At the end when the battery is about to be depleted, the pump may be discharging at less than five gallons per minute.DC systems efficiently consume DC current and can run continuously for several hours (up to 10 hours continuously and intermittently for several days).An AC based back-up system typically consists of an AC heavy duty pump, a 12 volt deep cycle battery (or two batteries if a 24 volt system), and an inverter with a battery charger).An inverter converts the DC power of the battery to its AC counterpart.Unlike a DC pump, an AC pump will run close to its maximum potential capability until the battery charge is depleted.For example, if the AC pump can pump at a rate of 50 gallons per minute, it will continue at close to this rate (with minimal loss over time) until the battery power source is depleted.It is important to select an AC pump with efficient amperage rating (3-7 amp hours), otherwise the system will not run long enough before the battery source is depleted and the system shuts down.An efficient AC pump can discharge as much as the best DC system because it is discharging at a greater rate than most DC systems even though it shuts down faster than a good DC pump system.The key advantage of going with an AC system is that it is easier to match it up with its primary pump counterpart.Since the AC system requires an inverter, it is typically more expensive than DC systems which do not require an expensive inverter for its operation.The best way to compare different available systems is to compare the total amount of gallons discharged with a given battery (beginning with a fully charged battery recommended by the manufacturer) and that the data, ideally determined by an independent testing agency, represents the time and performance until the system shuts down).The values should have been generated at an 8-10 ft.Head.The head is the distance that the pump discharges vertically (in a basement, it is usually 8-10 ft).For the most part, A DC system will discharge at a rate less than the primary pump can discharge.Whether this is good enough is something that the homeowner and/or contractor must make a judgment call on.An AC system can be matched more effectively to the performance of the primary pump.The best scenario is that the homeowner has determined how effectively his primary pump has performed during a major storm and matches that performance with that of the back-up system, whether it be an AC or a DC system.

    I recently learned that you could recondition a battery and restore it to near 100% working condition again using something called a desulfator.It had been something that I had been trying to figure out for quite some time.I'm sure that you've noticed that over time any battery that you use seems to hold less of a charge (it dies quicker).For most household rechargeable batteries this really isn't a big deal because they don't really cost that much to replace.In the case of lead acid batteries though.They can cost upwards of $100 to replace and I really wanted to find out some way to make them last longer.After quite a long time of searching I finally learned about battery reconditioning.Battery reconditioning is a very interesting process.Basically, you hook up a desulfator (which also goes by the name nanopulser) and over time it rejuvenated your old battery to 100% working condition again.First, you should learn exactly why your lead acid batteries stop working in the first place.As you charge and discharge a deep cycle battery it begins to build up sulfates on the lead plates in the battery.When these sulfates start sticking to the plates instead of floating around in the acid your battery starts to hold less of a charge.If nothing is done enough of these sulfates build up and eventually the battery will simply not hold a charge anymore.That is.Unless you decide to recondition it.Basically what a battery reconditioner does is send high amperage extremely fast pulses of energy into the battery.These pulses break up the sulfates that have stuck on to the lead plates in the battery and they once again dissolve back in to the battery acid.Generally, battery reconditioning happens over a period of 1 - 3 weeks.The process is as follows..The very first thing you do is hook up your battery charger to the battery and do a full charge.Once it's fully charged you then unhook the battery and let it sit for 8 - 10 hours.After it's done sitting get your multimeter out and take a voltage reading.As long as it reads above 10.6 volts than it means that this battery is a good candidate for reconditioning.Now you hook the battery reconditioner up to the battery and let it do it's thing for a couple of days (make sure to leave the charger hooked up on trickle charge).After that, you fully discharge the battery and charge it back up again.Take a voltage reading and keep repeating this process until you reach 13.6 volts to 14.8 volts (depending on your battery) reading on your multimeter.The nice thing about battery reconditioning is that as long as you take care of your batteries you can keep reconditioning them until they get a shorted or open cell.That means instead of your batteries lasting you 2 - 5 years they could last you 10 or more years (with proper care).Is learning how to recondition a battery worth it? Definitely! After you recondition your first battery you'll be saving $90 for every single battery that you recondition afterwards.

    A Dual Battery System For Your Camper Trailer Or Caravan


    If you have a caravan, Camper Trailer or RV you might often want to take it off the beaten track and get down and dirty with nature.I'm talking about the wilderness experience; selecting a campsite that offers little in the way of services - especially electrical power.In these cases you will have to rely on your battery power, and if you plan on staying a few days and still want the convenience of light, fans, radio and maybe DVD player, etc, you will need to boost your power reserves somehow.In this article I will discuss how you can accomplish that.It may not suit everyone's needs or pocketbook, but if it gives you food for thought it will be a good start.First off let's have a look at some battery facts.There are three main types of battery, conventional wet cell, deep cycle, and AGM, and left to right reads from least to most expensive.The conventional type battery is usually found under your vehicle hood and has to provide a heavy current surge to start your engine.These batteries are not intended to be deep cycled and will have a very limited lifetime if exposed to that.Deep Cycle batteries are not meant for heavy current drains but can be discharged to lower levels.These are usually found as auxiliary batteries in a vehicle or caravan.Both of these battery types need to be vented to the open air because they can generate explosive gases during the charge/discharge cycles.Also bear in mind that batteries do not like being discharged and will rapidly deteriorate if repeatedly discharged below about 50% of their capacity.So, if you have either of these batteries with a 100 Ampere Hour rating, you only really have 50 Ampere Hours of capacity.That is the rule of thumb you should use.Now add to this the fact that if you are charging from a vehicle alternator, the electrics in the charging system will only charge the battery to around 80% of its capacity.This means that potentially you may only have a usable 40 Ampere Hours.AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries on the other hand are in my opinion the battery of choice.They last longer than the other types.They are sealed and so can be stored just about anywhere, even on their side if you want.All they require is venting to atmosphere.Because of their construction these batteries charge faster and at a lower voltage so will charge closer to that magic 100% of capacity when using conventional chargers.They can also be occasionally discharged below the 50% threshold without long term damage.Consequently an AGM battery will last longer if treated well (typically 8 to 10 years).Now the bad news.They are more expensive than conventional batteries.In my pop-top camper trailer I use two 110 Ampere Hour AGM batteries wired in parallel.This gives me at full charge, a usable 110 Ampere Hours (220 AH / 2).This preserves the life of my batteries and provides me plenty of power, plus a small margin if I need it in emergencies.The camper is fitted with a "smart charger" so that when I am connected to mains power the batteries will charge close to 100% capacity.I also charge the batteries from the vehicle alternator when traveling and this requires some safeguards - you do not want to discharge your starter battery below its operational level, so a battery isolator to protect it is essential.I have used this system on several occasions for extended stay camps and had plenty of power for lighting, water pump, radio/CD player, TV/DVD player and so on.You can work out your battery drain by identifying all the appliances you want to run, what their current draw is multiplied by the use time.For full details including schematic see my resource box below.
