I bought this Jump starter in Dec. 2007 and to this day is working like a charm! What you must understand about this jumper is that it may or may not assist to start a bad battery (a battery that will no longer take a charge and you must replace). I say may or may not because it depends on the size of what you are jumping. Unfortunately all my cars are eight cylinder vehicles, so I am not that lucky. Until this winter, this jumper has NEVER failed to jump start my vehicles. This winter (2011), I did not drive my vehicle for over a month, with the temps in the low 20s, I tried to jump start my car only to have it fail. Well, this was a first so I took the battery out and brought it in to have it slow charged over night. In the morning, I discovered that the battery would not take a charge and was defective. So for those of you who think that this will jump start all cars, all the time - NO - but it will do what it was intended to do as long as the battery is not defective. I... Read more

It wasn't powerful enough to jump-start my car. I'd been on vacation, hadn't driven the car in a few weeks, came back to find the battery too low to start; the Schumacher did not do the trick. It's hard to say whether this was a fair test. I eventually used, not a jump-starter, but a recharger on the battery, which since then has worked fine. So we'll see how the jump-starter works if there's a next time, but it did not work in the emergency that I had.

Electric Cars: Their Past, Present and Future

Electric Cars: Their Past, Present and Future

Today it seems incredible, but electric vehicles came into the world even before our usual cars with ICE (internal combustion engines) did.In the early 20th century they already obtained a pretty wide popularity in USA, and existed as passenger cars, trucks and omnibuses - prototypes of modern buses.Interest to the electric vehicles revived in the middle of last century, during the oil crisis, and since then it has been constantly growing. The reasons for this - are not only the rising prices for petroleum products, but also the environmental concern, as far as electric cars are friendlier to the environment than traditional cars.Actually the main advantages of such a vehicle is its environmental friendliness, and not only because of absence of harmful exhausts emission into the atmosphere, but also due to elimination the need for any fuel made from petroleum products, motor oil and antifreeze.Add to that the simplicity of construction and maintenance, a complete fire and explosion safety, the low fuel price (in this case - electricity), the ability to recharge the engine as from special high-voltage battery chargers, as well as from ordinary household electrical outlet. An electric vehicle moves smoothly, softly and silently. That last property appears to be also a disadvantage of electric vehicles - because of their low noise, the number of accidents involving pedestrians may increase. pedestrians simply can not hear them.Manufacturers take into consideration this feature and, developing new models, they add such useful options as artificial noise or whistles. But the main drawback of electric vehicles is from the one hand, the lack of electric power reserve and a small run on a single charge, speaking of the batteries of mid-range cost, or extremely high cost of high-performance cars on the other. If we compare the two cars of the same class with similar characteristics - the electric car will be much more expensive than a car driven by an ICE, and the lion's share of its value will hold the batteries.Almost all of these machines perform well with smooth acceleration and constant speed, but lose a significant amount of energy during sudden starts, in addition, a certain amount of battery power is spent on secondary functions, such as lighting and heating the cabin, in addition during the cold season the battery loses much of its capacity. The problem of disposing of used batteries of electric vehicles, which contain substances of very high concern, can be marked as the environmental aspects of electric car's defects, as well as the problem of high electricity demand, which will take place at the widespread distribution of electric cars.We will have to build additional power plants which definitely won't bring much benefit to nature.Add to this, lack of lack of specialized filling stations in numerous places, and too long charging of the cars compared to filling the fuel tank. Now this time is half an hour at special high-voltage charging stations and a few hours on regular 220 volt mains. And yet, electric vehicles have a right to exist.Today almost all well-known manufacturers have an electric car.The models are constantly being improved, increasing their cruising range, speed maximum and decreasing time to recharge. Many brands have hybrids in their lineup - a mix of electric and conventional gasoline or diesel car.Experts believe that many of the existing drawbacks of electric cars will be removed in about 10-20 years, and this will characterize the beginning of "green" cars era.

Keep Your Car Battery Optimally Charged With a Charger Power Pack

Keep Your Car Battery Optimally Charged With a Charger Power Pack

If you are planning on taking a vacation for several months then one thing you will need to do is ensure your car batteries are optimally charged.Unfortunately, what many people do is simply allow their battery to die thinking that they can always get it recharged later on.While this is usually enough to get the job done, what ultimately happens is that the battery life is cut short.Benefits to using a battery maintainer. The best solution then is to invest in a car battery charger as these are specifically designed to keep batteries from losing their charge. One of the best ones available right now is from Battery Tender as they are very simple to use and inexpensive as well. All you do is ensure that everything is hooked up and you can literally walk away without any maintenance on your part. The Battery Tender charger comes equipped with a four step charging process that will automatically switch to maintenance mode. What this means then is that you have a battery that is optimally charged at all times so that you can fire up your engine when needed.Gone are the days of the clicking noise from your engine as you turn the ignition key.Reasons to have a battery charger. One very common cause of battery failure is simply due to not driving for an extended period as the battery eventually loses its charge. If you plan to take a vacation then you simply must have a charger so that your car can still start up when you return from your trip. This will certainly save future frustrations of having to take the battery to a local automotive shop to get it charged again.Another reason to have a battery charger is that you simply can never know when a roadside emergency may come up.Having a charger or some sort of jump starter will help you out of these tricky situations instead of having to rely on towing services. These electrical devices are not even that expensive too so keeping one in the car is a must.Assuming proper maintenance has been done, a normal car battery has about three years of life before it needs a replacement. Not many people realize but a charger can actually help to extend the life of a battery which means that you can easily save hundreds of dollars.Having a battery charger is certain to pay for itself which is why many individuals are now starting to keep them in their cars.

2.0 out of 5 stars This WILL overcharge and destroy your car battery, July 9, 2010
By
This review is from: DieHard 10/2/50 amp. Automatic Battery Charger Model# 71222
This is listed as a "fully automatic" car battery charger, which means that if you select a charge amperage it's supposed to automatically maintain that charge amperage.

However, "fully automatic" does NOT mean this is a Battery Maintainer. This does NOT have Float-Mode Monitoring. You cannot just connect this to your car battery and forget it because if you do, pretty soon this will completely destroy your battery.

If you do not disconnect this charger after your battery is fully-charged, it will overcharge your car battery which will reduce it's capacity and eventually ruin it permanently. You need to read the manual carefully to figure this out and you need to connect a separate battery meter to determine if the battery is fully charged.

You can safely ignore the meter on the front because it's useless. With a fully dead battery, the meter will show as fully charged.

This is O.K. for a brute-force charging but the phrase "fully automatic"... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Used for many years and like it alot !, November 14, 2011
This review is from: DieHard 10/2/50 amp. Automatic Battery Charger Model# 71222
Have used this charger for several years with no problems. As long as you read the instructions and make sure you remove the charger when the light is on and shows the battery fully charged. The good thing about this charger is you can use it for a motorcycle, car battery, or use the 50 amp setting to start the car right away. Also has a 3 year warranty from Sears if new.

This charger is really good. We bought it to charge our batteries on our golf cart which were totally run down. Therefore, our golf cart charger wouldn't charge. Once we got some power to the batteries, voila, the golf cart charger kicked into action. A great tool to keep in the garage.

Golf Cart Battery Basics

Golf Cart Battery Basics

Golf cart batteries are the life-force behind your electric golf cart.Golf carts run off of what are called deep-cycle batteries.Although they look similar to normal car batteries, deep-cycle batteries serve a completely different purpose. While both are lead-acid based, deep-cycle batteries provide a steady current over a long period of time, whereas car batteries provide a very large current over a short period of time. This is because golf carts, like other electric vehicles, derive all their power from their batteries. One battery is not enough to run a golf cart.Instead, they use battery packs that consist of multiple batteries.Individual golf cart batteries usually come in 6-volts or 8-volts.The combined total of the voltage from each battery makes up the total golf cart voltage. For instance, a 36-volt golf cart probably has six 6-volt batteries. And a 48-volt golf cart probably has either eight 6-volt batteries or six 8-volt batteries. And as you can probably guess, the higher the voltage the longer the run time and the greater the power. If your batteries aren't charged, however, it doesn't matter how many volts your battery pack has, it's still not going to run.The type of golf cart charger you would need depends on the total number of volts your battery pack has.A 36V golf cart requires a 36 volt charger, and a 48V golf cart requires a 48 volt charger. If you have a 36V golf cart and later decide to upgrade to a 48V golf cart by adding two additional 6V batteries, you can either purchase an additional 12V charger for two new batteries, or you can replace your 36V charger with a 48V charger, just so long as the voltage from the charger corresponds with the voltage of the batteries. To keep your golf cart running strong you're going to want to charge your batteries after every use. Most new chargers are fully automated, which means they regulate the current so that you do not over-charge your batteries. If you have an older golf cart charger that is not fully automated you would want to set a timer to shut off the charger after your cart is fully charged.A good rule of thumb is to charge it for at least twice as long as you drove it.Another thing to be aware of is how well your batteries are performing. To keep them in tip-top shape requires proper care. You should be aware of such information as proper water levels and cleaning techniques. The most proactive thing you can do is to take proper safety measures and set up a weekly or monthly schedule to make sure everything is well maintained. One weak battery will bring down all of the otherwise strong batteries to the weakest battery's level, so it makes sense to keep them all properly maintained. If you want to customize your cart with electrical golf cart accessories, they too will be powered from your golf cart batteries. There are several ways to hook them up, and the best way depends on your particular situation. Most electrical golf cart accessories are 12V accessories, which means they run off of twelve volts. The quick and easy way to power your accessories is to hook them up directly to two of your 6V batteries. But this can cause an imbalance in your battery pack, especially if you have too many accessories requiring too much wattage. At this point it would be better to add a separate auxiliary battery strictly to run your accessories, or a converter to evenly distribute the power from all of your batteries to your accessories. When it's time to replace your batteries you will need to think about proper golf cart battery disposal. To recycle your old batteries you should take them to a retailer who recycles old batteries for resale. Most retailers that sell lead-acid batteries also take used batteries because it is required by most state laws.Recycling your used golf cart batteries is good for the environment and good for the health of you and those around you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total Piece of JUNK, April 4, 2011

The people who wrote good reviews for this expensive piece of garbage must have been strawpersons for the manufacturer! This thing is junk. The nozzle on the compressor hose is a worthless piece of plastic that's barely strong enough or situated firmly enough to push in the stem on a tire valve. The compressor is "rated" as "260 PSI" but this is a joke and must be simply because the gauge has an upper marking of "260" on it. In reality this unit could not even deliver 40 PSI into my car tire! On top of that, the battery terminal clamp snapped right off the very first time I attempted to hook it to a car battery. Closer inspection revealed this as no great surprise in view of the cheap brittle plastic used to make the clamps. Now I have an expensive piece of junk that cannot be returned. BUYER BEWARE... BE VERY BEWARE!

Item arrived as expected but was defective and would not take a battery charge. I called the company direct and they replaced it immediately with no issues whatsoever. The company informed me that Amazon and such on line vendors tend to keep these items in the warehouse way too long. I am happy that the company took responsibilty and so now I am a satisfied customer.
